about

Clear the ring for Marina & the Kats! With their new album "Swingsalabim" they captivate us once again and enter completely new terrain. Surrounded by the charm of nostalgia, the new songs dance high on the pulse of time. Tamer Marina has her kats firmly under control with her unmistakably fresh and yet touching voice and always conjures up new ideas from her top hat.
Her travelling circus has pitched its tents in countless places over the last two years. So she knows the feeling of being "on the road", always has a little velvet-covered booklet in her red tailcoat and writes little fables in it in big pictures. Of mice and elephants, eternal streets, of drunken nights, fantastic nightclubs in the stars, of life as a courted princess of vaudeville.
But also about how to assert oneself as a director in a macho-dominated world, how to stand one's ground when one wears the trousers. She also strikes more contemplative notes and slips into the costume of the sad clown when she sings of the impending farewell to a loved one.
Emancipated from the mere retro sound, a completely new style emerges from the love for the attitude to life of the burgeoning modern age, which is more than a reference to days gone by.
Independent, unmistakable. Glittering, enchanting, right to the heart.

What was already announced with the two excellent albums "Small" and "Wild" continues smoothly on "Swingsalabim". The trio effortlessly combines light-footed, catchy rhythms with crisp songwriting and a striking dose of fun. Marina & The Kats have long since found their identity. On their third album, they pedal free of sound clichés and prejudices. The "smallest big band in the world" creates a vintage and retro sound of days long gone by, without restricting themselves too much to the aesthetics of that era. Musically and thematically, they skilfully cast an eye on current events and mix the most diverse epochs.

Thus Marina and her Kats are more convincing than ever with new sound worlds and surprising twists. In addition to the classic, earworm-rich swing elements in songs like "Get On With It" or "1000 Miles Ahead", the band ventures into new realms without losing their timeless, pumping vintage sound. Thus, the bluesy "I Should Have Known Better" proves to be a powerful-voiced reflection on a momentous evening, "No No No" flirts with Balkan melodicism, "Say What?" shows that being a woman is completely without clichés and patriarchal thinking, and "Wherever You May Go" proves to be a gentle proof of love with graceful fragility.

Marina always wears the trousers and tells stories openly and honestly, as they have already happened to all of us. Laughing, shouting, singing along and crying are expressly encouraged! If you listen to her snare and cymbal sounds, you will inevitably start dancing. Thomas Mauerhofer and Peter Schönbauer support her on the string instruments and provide the unmistakable sound that goes far beyond mere swing. Marina & The Kats are the good conscience for the often harsh present. With "Swingsalabim" they conjure up a good time and prove themselves to be sovereign creators of independent sound cascades. The perfect soundtrack for parties with style and verve.

about

Marina & The Kats Austria

Whether it's true or not, every great band needs a great band story. The story of Marina and the Kats is pretty cool - and nothing but the truth! It all started at a party in Graz. An evening spent together sealed the trio's fate. That evening, old 7" records were spinning on the turntables and the three had their first common epiphany: jazz is by far THE best dance music ever. ... more
